The first locks and keys date back over 4000 years to the Egyptian empire, were created from wood and relied on the same pin and tumbler principles utilised in the locks we still use today. Following that, lock designs have been discovered to have been in use both the Roman and Greek empires independently.

Significant advances in lock design, construction and materials used to increase the security of locks were made in Europe and the Americas in the 1700’s and 1800’s with the creation of warded locks and motice keys.

Locksmithing has traditionally been viewed as a trade, but recent advances have elevated it to more than that. Today we have easy access to stronger and more durable materials such as steel, nickel, silver and brass while digital enhancements mean we can now utilise codes, RFID cards, fingerprint readers and even WiFi connectivity. These developments have made Locksmithing  more of science, and through its proper application, an art form.
