Is a drain at your place hopelessly blocked? A simple thing like a clogged sink or toilet can grind the happy-to-lucky atmosphere of any home to a frustrating halt – and it’s always tempting to reach immediately for the harshest chemicals on the hardware store shelf to blast through it as quickly as possible. But believe it or not, a homemade natural drain cleaner can actually be just as effective as an expensive, bad-for-the-environment and bad-for-your-health and bad-for-your-plumbing-pipes commercial liquid product.

1. Almost-boiling water
For unblocking your drains, it doesn’t get any more natural than H2O! The key, however, is really the heat – as long as it’s not so hot that it has the potential to actually damage your pipes. Give it just a few minutes after the kettle boils before pouring it in there in slow progressive stints, and much of the kind of muck that bungs up the pipes can simply melt away.
2. Baking soda and vinegar drain cleaner
You’ve probably got them in the pantry already, and when mixed together they make a bubbly and potent natural drain unblocker brew. Mixing up the concoction is easy enough – half a cup of the baking soda and half a cup of white vinegar, pour it in and then put the plug over the top of the drain to let the fizzly action begin. Follow up with a kettle of almost-boiling water and you’re done.
3. Cream of tartar
Lovers of making their own cakes probably also have some cream of tartar in the cupboard. Mix up a full cup of baking soda with just a few tablespoons of cream of tartar and finish off the recipe with half a cup of salt. Give the concoction a good stir – or preferably a shake – and then pour it down the drain with some hot water.
4. Borax
Borax has plenty of uses, including household cleaning, but rest assured it’s completely naturally occurring. Mix a full cup of salt, Borax and white vinegar in roughly even parts, pour it into the drain followed up by a kettle of hot water, and for maximum effect let it sit for an hour.
5. Lemon juice
There’s a reason a lot of cleaning products are lemon-scented – it just smells ‘clean’. That’s because our noses are great at instinctively detecting that citric acid also has great antibacterial properties – so why not brew up your own lemon cleaner? Mix half a cup of lemon juice with another half-cup of baking soda and pour it down the drain for it to sit for an hour.
