But is a freestanding bath really all it’s cracked up to be for the rest of us?

THE PROS

1. The look
Forget the practicality just for a moment, and let’s start with the obvious one: stand alone bathtubs simply look the best. If you want what the celebrities have, there’s no doubt that free standing tubs are the luxurious choice.
2. The options
Opting for freestanding tubs doesn’t mean you have to be ushered into a stylistic corner, because the design options are actually pretty much endless. From the classic claw-foot to the ultra-modern egg-shaped free standing bath, there’s no longer any limit to the shape, style and size you’re looking for.
3. The install
If you ask the tradies about how hard it is to install free standing bath tubs, the answer will be simple: It’s not hard at all. In fact, you can almost certainly forget the tiler and the decorator and simply call a plumber. They’ll do the rest and it will be a simple job.
4. The location
When it comes to free standing baths, the emphasis is on the word ‘free’. Fancy positioning your new tub as a centrepiece right under a skylight? No worries! Other bath designs need to use the room in one way or another to fit in, but with a freestanding tub, plonk it where you like!
THE CONS
Ok, so we won’t lie: a freestanding bath is not necessarily the most practical choice.
1. The expense
Easier to install, yes. But there’s no denying that the cheapest freestanding bath you can find will cost more than the cheapest bath full stop, even though you’ll save some money with the simple installation.
2. The weight
You’ll have to look into whether your existing floor can support the hefty weight of a free standing tub, but there are lighter materials you can go for if need be.
3. The practicality
There’s also no doubt that for smaller bathroom designs, it’s harder to combine a freestanding bath with a fully-fledged shower – so you might need to choose between one or the other. Freestanding tubs are also not quite as practical in terms of storage ledges, and both cleaning the bath and washing kids and pets are probably going to be harder in your luxurious tub.
