Importance Of Australian Counselling Association (ACA)

Being a Registered Counselling Supervisor with the Australian Counselling Association (ACA) is something I consider to be a privilege as well as being a huge responsibility. Having worked in the profession for over 10 years and relocated a number of times I have managed to sustain an ongoing and profitable private practice.

Having recently relocated to Central West NSW, servicing small country towns like Young, Cowra and Forbes I have had a recent growth in clients. I say this not to ‘big myself up’ but from a place that it is possible to create a profitable private practice almost anywhere. More so now during the COVID-19 pandemic there is a massive increase in mental issues with a need for more on-line services.

These come at a cost to the counsellor or psychotherapist, or from my view ANY professional that provides mental health and disability support, even early childhood and support workers. Counselling and Clinical supervision therefore has a number of aims I try to achieve, such as the following:

l  Firstly ensuring your own self care and ability to sustain and do effective work with clients.

l  Building a profitable private practice (if this applies) and how to maintain it.

l  Continued guidance on professional and personal development.

l  To meet criteria for ongoing supervision, which is a minimum of 10 supervisions a year.

l  Identify any challenges and roadblocks, thinking together how we may solve them.

l  Manage and handle crisis situations that can arise with our work.

There are many other factors but these are the key things I am to deliver, bringing with me my years of experience personally and professionally, even I maintain weekly supervision! With more people moving away from capital cities, both the need and demand for mental health services and counselling is on the up and isn’t going to change any time soon.

Another great advantage as our need goes up is the ability to provide supervision for others over Zoom, meaning you get choice and control as well as finding something to meet your specific needs. I always encourage prospective supervisee’s to shop around, and ask questions in relation to the above bullet points. After an initial meeting, if we both feel we are a fit then we can look at formally commencing supervision.

If you want to enquire or ask more questions please pick up the phone or give me an email.’
